Russo fills Senior Club VP vacancy

The Senior Class will not be without their Pints with Profs, wine tastings and Oktoberfest this year. Nicole Russo ’14 has stepped in to fill the vacated position and organize the graduation class’ social events as the new Vice President for Senior Club.

The Vice President for Senior Club helps oversee the Senior Club, a bi-monthly event series for the senior class that mixes a relaxed social atmosphere with fundraisers and academic discussions. It is the Vice President’s duty to manage the 11-member student committee, organize and execute all Senior Club events as well as serve as a liaison between faculty and students.

After the previous Vice President for Senior Club, Robert Spriggs ‘14, vacated the position, Student Senate began the process of interviewing new candidates for the job.

According to Senior Class President Mike Meyers ’14, Student Senate wanted to select someone who was already well involved with Student Senate and capable of handling the organizational responsibilities of the position.

Russo was one of three applicants who interviewed for the position.

“We chose Nicole because, beyond her previous experience with organizing events, she gave us ideas during the interview that we hadn’t even considered,” said Meyers, who sat down with each applicant alongside Student Senate President William Nelligan ’14.

The previous Vice President for Senior Club, Robert Spriggs ’14, expressed his enthusiasm for Russo’s appointment.

“Nikki has been a great friend of mine for quite some time,” said Spriggs. “She has so many great ideas that have the potential to take this year’s Senior Club places it has never been. Senior Club is in great hands.”

Only a week into her new job, Russo is already working on ways to correct what she sees as past mistakes with the Senior Club.

“Last year was seen by faculty as a very senior-centric social event,” explained Russo. “Faculty started not wanting to come and not seeing on even attending. This year we’re providing a more academic focus for Senior Club.”

This year Russo also promised to start utilizing lesser-used campus locations. She plans to begin working on events within the newly purchased Allison Hall as well as exploring the possibility of taking students to the College Farm.

“It’s our final year at Dickinson,” concluded Russ. “It’s time for us to meet people we haven’t met yet and embrace the community we have created at Dickinson.”

The next Senior Club, “Around The World,” will be on Thursday, Oct. 17 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in Allison Hall. The event, which will feature multi-ethnic food and drink, will have Executive Director Center for Global Study & Engagement Michael Monahan and Assistant Vice President for Student Development Phil Jones as guest speakers.
