Her Campus Comes to Our Campus
A chapter of Her Campus, an online magazine catered towards college women, is officially coming to Dickinson on September 20.
Her Campus includes content ranging from world news to quizzes. According to Her Campus’s website, articles are written entirely by college journalists.
Alexandra Stagliano ’17, who has been reading Her Campus since she was a first-year, was inspired to apply to establish a Dickinson chapter. “…I always found stuff that I was interested in; there’s a lot of diverse topics that the site covers and I always thought it was a shame that Dickinson didn’t have our own chapter,” said Stagliano.
To open a chapter, one must apply through Her Campus’s website. Each application must be supported by a team of five students to make up an executive board. Currently committed are: Stagliano, Goeun Choi ’17, Senior Editor; Sam Reiersen ’19, Events Director; Alexis Scott ’19, Marketing & Publicity Director and Sabrina Boxers ’19, Social Media Director.
The second step, says Stagliano, was “getting enough students interested in participating that the magazine can continue.” She then submitted a written application and participated in an interview. “It’s all about learning at Her Campus, whether it’s PR, marketing, social media or writing, and I think that even the application process really stresses that,” says Stagliano.
Now that Her Campus has accepted Dickinson as a chapter, Stagliano’s and her team’s focus has shifted toward finding writers and developing interest in the magazine, as well as increasing awareness of the club on campus. “Recruiting is something that we’re really working on, and finding diverse people who want to write. We’re open to anyone, so anyone who wants to write for us can write for us,” says Stagliano.
In addition, Stagliano says writers can explore a range of topics: “You can literally write about whatever you’re interested in… there’s politics, there’s tips for when you move into campus, or ‘Caf Hacks,’ one of the articles that we have for our launch.”
“The aim is to target women at colleges because women in the media don’t necessarily have much of a platform to get their voices out,” says Stagliano. “Once [our chapter is] registered we will be trying to do events on campus. An idea we had was a body-positive fashion show…We really hope to bring a positive new group to campus…to impact the community in a way that’s constructive.”
Stagliano believes “…there’s a future for Her Campus at Dickinson… I’m excited to see what they’ll do with [the magazine] and how it grows.”
