MLB Opening Day picnic a sweet success

March 28 was Major League Baseball’s opening day, which for many east coast fans was a day full of victory and pride as the Pirates, Yankees, Red Sox and Orioles all won their respective games.

If you’re a Chicagoan, like myself or a Midwesterner in general, sadly you cannot share the same sentiment as the Cubs, Sox, Cardinals and Royals all fell to their respective opponents, (though the Cubs were only one down and the Twins won so take that Sox fans.)

Despite the range of regional wins, every Dickinson student was able to celebrate their team’s opening day as Dickinson Dining put on the MLB Opening Day Picnic on Morgan Field. Though the event did, unfortunately, lack an actual way to watch the game outside of a phone or personal device, the night was full of fun and excitement for baseball fans campus-wide as, win or lose, all could enjoy the array of ballpark favorites.

From hot dogs and DIY tater tots, to funnel cakes, snow cones, milkshakes and cotton candy, all baseball comfort foods made an appearance. The event’s food was provided  by Dickinson Dining and local vendors. Winning the night for me was the cotton candy, as I had never indulged in such a sweet delicacy before.

Not only was this night a fun getaway from the stress of the semester, and a nice way to ring in the new baseball season, but it was also a refreshing reminder that spring is on its way. The night was full of great weather, picnic blankets on green grass and sunsets to remember.  No matter what team you root for, whether your team won or lost, or if  you’re even a baseball fan at all, this event was a great way to kick off the new season for both the MLB and the springtime weather.
