Last week, the Free xChange hosted an open house, inviting students to peruse items, chat with staff about sustainability and enjoy snacks.
The Free xChange was originally founded in 2016 as a small space in Landis House for the Dickinson community to donate and thrift free clothing, but after a stay in Allison Hall, the space moved last year into the HUB basement, now offering free books as well as clothing.
The Free xChange has become a major part of Dickinson’s culture. “Tours mention it without fail,” said Cara Kamoie ’26, an intern for the Center for Sustainability Education. Lindsey Lyons, the Director of Sustainability Learning, said that students, faculty and staff have visited for various reasons. Some are looking for clothing for interviews, some are looking for gender-affirming clothing, some are underprivileged who may not otherwise have access to clothing and many simply have an interest in thrifting. “DEI, sustainability, and community engagement… it does all of that,” said Lyons.
Last spring, the Board of Trustees donated work clothing to the Free xChange. Lyons says the donation must have been sorely needed because it was “all gone in like, a few hours.” Kamoie said she often finds high quality items and wonders why someone would choose to give them away. “One man’s trash is another man’s treasure,” she said.
Due to upcoming renovations in the HUB, the Free xChange will be moved to a yet to be determined location by December 23. Both Kamoie and Lyons expressed concern over the Free xChange’s accessibility in a new location. Nathan Packel ’27, a self-described “Free xChange fan,” said the resource was in “the perfect spot” for frequenting with friends.
The Free xChange is always open to students and always accepting donations. Please contact [email protected] with any questions.
