Denim Coffee at the Quarry has recently changed the ways that students can purchase their goods using the most popular meal plans, Any21 and Any15.
One swipe can now be used to purchase one of three options: a combo of any drink (excluding smoothies and frappes) and a pastry; a breakfast sandwich and a hot or flash-chilled coffee; or a smoothie or frappe.
Prior to this change, a student could use a swipe to get either a black coffee and a pastry or use two swipes to get a breakfast sandwich. Students had to use their own money or Flex points to purchase anything else on the menu.
After it opened on campus in Fall 2022, Denim Coffee quickly became a popular place on campus to hang out, study and de-stress on campus. Their shop sells drinks such as chai lattes, cappuccinos, smoothies and kombucha, as well as food such as breakfast sandwiches and pastries.
During this time, Dickinson College had an agreement with Denim Coffee to pay them $3.00 for each swipe. The reason that the College accorded the $3.00 for each swipe was to ensure that Denim Coffee could effectively execute a successful business on campus. However, this system often had an negative impact on a student’s swipe count, leaving less swipes for other dining options.
Dickinson’s administration took these frustrations into account and decided to come up with a solution. The Vice President for Finance, Dave Walker, collaborated with Denim Coffee to explore ways that these goods could be more readily available to the student body.
Following this joint effort, the two sides reached a consensus: the College will pay Denim Coffee $6.45 for each swipe. This way, students have greater access to everything on the menu without pulling out their own money, ratherable to get most of the items on the menu by using their meal plans.
This change has prompted postive responses amongst students and good results for Denim, with lines almost out the door being a common occurrence.
Through the collaboration with Denim Coffee, Dickinson is showing their students that they are endeavoring to enhance the experiences of daily student life. The shop is more than a place to pick up coffee. It is rather a place where students go to connect with one another, unwind after a lengthy, demanding lecture and improve their well being. With these adjustments in place, students are able to look forward to their daily Denim Coffee trips without worrying about the cost of their latte or running out of swipes prior to the end of the week.
