Letter to the Editor

In the September 25, 2013 issue of the Dickinsonian, there was an article entitled “DPS Enforces Bike Fee”. This article contained some erroneous information that we would like to clarify.

In September 2012 the College policy on “Bicycle Registration, Storage and Security Policy” was amended, at the suggestion of the college Workplace Safety Committee, to include a $50.00 fine if a bicycle which was improperly parked or stored had to be removed. The intention of this policy change was to deter members of the community from parking or storing bicycles in hazardous locations such as stairwells, hallways, and handicapped access areas.

To date, Public Safety has not removed an improperly parked bicycle or assessed a fine of this type. Public Safety will not remove bicycles unless they pose an immediate safety hazard, and only after attempts to contact the owner of the bicycle have been unsuccessful.

We understand bicycle parking on campus is limited and may not always be convenient. We encourage students to contact Student Senate if you feel additional bicycle parking is needed in a specific area. Public Safety is also working with Facilities Management to look into increasing the number of bike racks on campus.

If you have any questions or suggestions regarding this subject, please don’t hesitate to contact me directly.
