In our Oct. 5, 2023 print issue, we ran an article about the service dogs currently on campus, including how they support their handlers and how the community should respect them.
The article referenced “Animals on Campus” policy, which outlines places where different types of animals are allowed on campus. In this policy, three different categorizations for animals are provided: service animals, emotional support animals and pets.
In order to clarify the original phrasing of the article, which stated that, “there are three different types of animals on campus that are permitted on campus with accommodations: service animals, emotional support animals and pets”, the policy describes pets as “an animal kept for ordinary use and companionship,” and are not allowed to be kept by students on campus. The only animals students are allowed to have in their residential spaces are fish in tanks not exceeding 20 gallons. Pets such as dogs, are only allowed on campus outside of buildings and on a leash. This does not include service animals and emotional support animals.
