The Dickinsonian has shifted our editorial standards in response to the current political and cultural climate in the United States.
In order to maintain transparency and clarity in our reporting, our policy is to avoid granting anonymity to individuals except in certain circumstances. We will grant anonymity to individuals being interviewed who face a clear and demonstrated risk for having their identities associated with the information they provide to reporters. This includes international students who may be at legal risk if they voice certain opinions or experiences.
Articles will not be removed from The Dickinsonian’s website unless measures to grant anonymity are insufficient to protect the safety of the individuals. We will retroactively grant anonymity to authors of articles published online at the request of those authors, when a clear and demonstrated risk to those authors develops, such as personal threats.
Should the information in any article be factually incorrect, we will edit the article online and make clear that a correction has been made, and issue a correction in the following print edition.
We encourage individuals to proactively contact us regarding corrections and seek anonymity should they believe that it is necessary for their safety, protection or wellbeing. All anonymity and takedown requests must be confirmed by the Editorial Board after discussion and agreement. Reporters may not grant anonymity to individuals without consulting the Editorial Board. As always, reporters should take care to identify themselves as representatives of The Dickinsonian and take their notes responsibly and conscientiously.
These policies are intended to provide students with increased protection and safety, minimizing the harm they may face, while simultaneously maintaining the journalistic ethics of accountability, transparency, and truth-telling in our reporting. Contact the Editorial Board at [email protected] with comments, queries, or concerns.
