Red Devils Rally to Second Seed in Centennial Playoffs

The men’s lacrosse team had a very successful week as they earned second place in the Centennial Conference.  On Wednesday, April 23 the Red Devils faced Muhlenberg, easily cruising to a 17-4 win. On Saturday, April 26 the Red Devils faced the Franklin and Marshall Diplomats and ended up winning 8-7 to assure their second place spot.

The game against Muhlenberg was a very special night for Brian Cannon ’14.  Cannon celebrated senior night in style by breaking the school’s all-time point record.  He surpassed Lael Campbell’s ’94 record of 218.

Tyler White ’15 started out the Red Devil’s four goal lead by scoring the first goal.  Kobi Frankel ’16 then received an assist from teammate Chase Phillips ’17 and scored.  Will Scott ’14 and Greg Shildkrout ’16 sunk two unassisted goals in the first quarter.  With the team up 4-1, Brett Parker ’15 scored off an assist from Greg Shildkrout ’16 to extend the lead before the end of the first quarter.

Dickinson continued their domination in the second quarter as they outshot the Red Devils 15-1 en route to taking a 10-1 halftime lead. All three goalies saw action as Nick Baxter ’16, Max Pawk ’14, and Palmer Murray ’15 combined to turn away 11 shots.

The Red Devils beat the nineteenth ranked Diplomats on Saturday.  Tyler Llewllyn ’17 started the game strong by scoring an unassisted goal just 54 seconds into the game.  Tyler White ’15 then scored off an assist from teammate Brian Cannon ’14.  Chase Phillips ’17 also scored in the first quarter, establishing the Red Devil’s lead of 3-2.

In the second quarter, the Red Devils did not score any goals and the Diplomats surged ahead to a 5-3 halftime lead.  However, Rob Kendall ’16 started the second half out with a goal from Gleason ’14.  Brett Parker ’15 scored the next unassisted goal.  The Red Devils then dominated the fourth quarter as they did not allow the Diplomats to score at all.  Brett Parker  ’15 scored a great goal with an assist from Chris Menard ’16.  Then, Parker ’15 passed the ball off to Gleason ’14 who scored the next goal.  Brian Cannon ’14 scored the final goal with 2:44 left in the game.  Nick Baxter had two crucial saves within the last two minutes and had 13 saves overall.  Carter Moore ’14 had another great game of face-offs, winning eleven out of nineteen and getting ten ground balls.  Michael Smith ’15 had a great defensive game, getting three groundballs and causing two turnovers.

This exciting win confirmed the Red Devil’s number two spot in the Centennial Conference.  The Red Devils will be hosting the Diplomats at home on Wednesday, April 30 for the first round of the Centennial Conference playoffs.
