Women Drop Two; Miss Chance at Centennial Playoffs

With a chance to secure a playoff spot, the Red Devils had two conference games remaining. They faced Muhlenberg at home on Wednesday, April 23, and on they went on the road against the Franklin and Marshall on Saturday, April 26. Neither game went as planned for the Red Devils as they lost both, falling to Muhlenberg in overtime, 13-11, and losing to F&M 20-10. The losses knocked Dickinson out of a chance to play in the playoffs.

Against Muhlenberg, Talene Bush ’17 and Katie Iverson ’16 both tallied goals in the first period of play, but the Devils trailed at the end of the first, as the Mules struck four times in the period. In a quarter dominated by strong defense and goaltending, Sydney Stern ’16 added another Devils score to cut the deficit in half, making the score 4-3 in favor of Muhlenberg as both teams went into their halftime meetings with their respective seasons on the line.

In the second half, Carly O’Brien ’15, Catie Ledwick ’16, Mara Cassidy ’16 and captain Caroline Clancy ’16 all tallied goals in the second half, and with only seconds left on the clock, Clancy ripped a shot into the back of the net as time expired to force overtime. In the extra period, the Devils were shut out while the Mules scored twice to take home an emotional win on the road.

The Devils looked to bounce back Saturday, as they traveled to Lancaster to take on the Franklin and Marshall, the #6 ranked team in the nation. While the game was tied at 3 goals apiece midway through the half, Franklin and Marshall went on a 9-0 run spanning both periods of play to break open the game by extending their lead to 12-3.

The Diplomats continued their dominance throughout the afternoon, by tacking on the last three goals of the contest to make the final score 20-10 in favor of Franklin and Marshall.

A bright spot on the day for the Red Devils was Carly O’Brien, who netted four goals during the game. O’Brien concluded the 2014 season with a team-high 34 goals. Moira Mahoney ’16 controlled five draws, three ground balls and also caused a pair of turnovers.

While the Red Devils did not make the conference tournament, they still had a strong season, winning their first five games and earning a national ranking during the first weeks of the season.

Jennifer Morrissey ’16, an attack who started all 17 games, shed some light on their season. “We had a great year and a great run this season. Starting off 5-0 was great for the program. Being ranked in the top 20 and beating great teams showed people the talent we had and have coming into next year,” said Morrissey. “We made great strides this year and hope to carry it on next year and plan on being in the tournament next year.”

The Red Devils look to build on their successes as they head into the 2015 season. They finished the 2014 season with an overall record of 9-8 and a Centennial Conference record of 4-5, good for a fifth-place tie. This marks an improvement from 2013, a season in which they went 7-9 and only 3-6 in the conference. They return a majority of their starters and will look to bring a Centennial Conference Championship back to Carlisle.
