Devils Extend Win Streak to 3 After Impressive Week

The bats came alive for the Red Devil Baseball, as Dickinson took 4 out of 5 with a combined score of 42-19 this past week when the Devils defeated Penn St.-Schuylkill (14-0), Lancaster Bible (8-2), and Swarthmore twice (12-6 and 8-3). Their only loss came against Shenandoah (2-8).

Against Penn St.-Schuylkill, Billy O’Neil ‘18 (1-1) pitched five scoreless innings with 4 walks and 5 strikeouts. Ryan Dolan ‘17 and Luke Besse ‘15 each had 2 runs batted in, while Robbie Thompson ‘15 added 3 RBIs.

Austin Sumners ‘18 had the lone RBI against Shenandoah with the other run coming off an error. Garrett Kurtz ‘16 gave up 6 ER in 3.1 innings pitched, while Matt Cowell ‘15 came on for 3.2 innings of scoreless relief and Cristian Acosta ‘17 added 2 innings of 1 run relief.

Steven Haynes ‘15 and Rich Hopkins ‘17 both had 2 RBIs against Shenandoah. Tyler Clausen-Wolf ‘16 got the victory after pitching 1.2 innings in relief with no runs.
Dickinson entered the week 4-8, but improved to 8-9 overall and 2-0 in conference. The double-header against Swarthmore on Sunday was the Devils’ first two games against a Centennial Conference opponent. Swarthmore, on the other hand, entered the contest 12-1 overall, but had no answer for the Devils.

In the first game, Dickinson led the entire game. After going up 2-0 at the top of the third after getting three singles from Thompson, Matt Primavera ‘16, and Phil Werner ‘17, the Garnet committed two throwing errors, which lead to the score. Swarthmore scored one at the bottom of the inning, but Dickinson responded with a five run fifth inning. They were able to add two more in the seventh, thanks to a two run homer by Werner with Primavera on base, and three runs in the eighth. Werner ended the game going 2-3 at the plate with 3 RBIs, and a walk. Harley Moore ‘15 (1-0) got the victory on the mound after going 6.2 with 2 ER, 5 BB and 6 SO.

Swarthmore took an early lead in the second game, scoring one run in the bottom of the first. Both teams remained scoreless until the 5th inning, when Dickinson erupted for five runs.

After committing five errors in the first game, the Garnet continued to struggle in the second of the double-header with five errors. Dickinson tied the game after two errors by Swarthmore, took the lead with a ground out by Dolan to drive in Mitch Helmandollar ‘15.

The scoring continued on a sac-fly by Primavera to score Sumners. The Devils scored one more in the sixth and the ninth. Clausen-Wolf came on for two scoreless innings of relief, striking out three and giving up one hit. Kurtz (2-3) pitched five innings, giving up 2 runs (1 earned) and one walk. Haynes ended the game going 3-5 with one RBI, while Dolan led the team with 2 RBIs.

The Red Devils will continue their conference play throughout this upcoming week, with games against Johns Hopkins at home on Wednesday, April 1 at 3:30 P.M. and at Hopkins on Thursday, April 2. They will play a double-header against Haverford at home as well on Saturday, April 4 kicking off at 12:30 P.M.
