Early NFL Playoff Picture: 8 Divisions in Review

AFC EAST: This division is more or less set in stone, as the Patriots will yet again claim the crown. Before the injury to Rob Gronkowski, the Pats had been unbeatable, but after two straight loses there is a little tension in New England. The Jets at 7-5 are currently in the last wild card spot, a game ahead of the 6-6 Bills.

AFC NORTH: Again, not too much drama at the top here. The 10-2 Bengals will win the division barring a melt down. The defense has been excellent and Andy Dalton has found his playmakers all year without turning the ball over. The Steelers at 6-6 have a shot at a wild card spot, but are on the outside looking in right now.

AFC SOUTH: This has been a very mediocre division all year. At 6-6, the Colts hold the tiebreaker over the 6-6 Texans, who are winners of four of their last five games. The Colts will try and tread water until Andrew Luck gets back, but the Texans defense is playing at an elite level fueld by JJ Watt and will not go away quietly.

AFC WEST: The 10-2 Broncos will win this divison behind a top-3 defense in the NFL. Brock Osweiler has been more than competent in relief of Peyton Manning, and may hold on to the job even wihen the hall of famer returns to health.

NFC EAST: This division has been painful to watch at best. There is a deadlock at the top between the Eagles, Giants and Redskins all at 5-7 with the Cowboys lurking a game behind, but without star QB Tony Romo for the season. No team has played nearly well enough to warrant a playoff spot, but one of these teams will earn that chance.

NFC North: The Packers and Vikings are in a two-horse race for the division title, as they both stand at 8-4 after the Packers escaped by the skin of their teeth this past Thursday night. The loser of the race, however, should find themselves in the wild card game.

NFC SOUTH: The Panthers have already mathematically secured this divison at 12-0. They have a very realistic chance at a perfect regular season with games against the Falcons (twice), the Bucs and the Giants. The Falcons are in the hunt for a Wild Card spot, but have been reeling as of late after a 5-0 start.

NFC WEST: The Cardinals seemingly had a firm grasp on the divison a few weeks ago, but the surging Seahawks are a scary site in Arizona’s rearview mirror. The Cardinals at 10-2 will easily make the Playoffs and should win the division, but a 7-5 Seahawks would love to change that and earn a home playoff game, but both teams should make the postseason.
