Women’s Basketball Back to Winning Ways after Senior Day

The Dickinson women’s basketball team split their games this week against Gettysburg and Swarthmore, falling to the Bullets and winning big against the Garnet.

The Red Devils quickly fell behind against Gettysburg as the Bullets jumped out to an 18-6 lead at the end of the first quarter despite strong play by Mary Martin ’17. Dickinson started the second quarter well, however, as Kassidy Lesher made three of four free throws after drawing two early fouls. Great defense by Martin and a 3-pointer by Sam Kennedy ’16 cut Gettysburg’s lead to eight. The Bullets countered with back-to-back layups to re-extend their lead to 24-12 near the midway  point in the second quarter. Martin and Lesher kept the scoring up for Dickinson as halftime approached, eventually narrowing Gettysburg’s lead down to eight before the Bullets went on a 6-0 run to end the half with the lead, 33-19.

Martin, Helen Roberts ’17 and Mackenzie Skerritt ’18 did most of the scoring in the third quarter as the Red Devils edged Gettysburg 10-9 to bring the score to 42-29 with 10 minutes left to play.

Dickinson managed to bring the Bullets lead down to single digits thanks to buckets by Roberts and Kennedy but Gettysburg was able to pull back out to a comfortable lead and win the game, 53-42.

Martin tallied a game-high 14 points to go with seven rebounds, three assists and four steals. Lesher corralled a game-high 14 rebounds along with seven points and two blocks.

The Red Devils got off to a lightning hot start against Swarthmore as Roberts started the scoring with a 3-pointer and Martin, Lesher and Kennedy all put up points to give Dickinson a 15-7 lead at the end of the first and continued the scoring into the second. Skerritt and Jackie Joyce ’19 joined in as well, contributing a layup and two jumpshots, respectively, giving the Red Devils a 37-16 lead going into halftime.

Dickinson’s blazing pace continued through the 3rd quarter as they outscored the Garnet 21-10, at one time leading by 36 points, and ending the quarter with a 58-26 lead.

Swarthmore came back in a big way in the final quarter of play, outscoring the Red Devils 30-13, but Dickinson’s lead proved insurmountable, as they held on to win by a score of 71-56.

Roberts led the Red Devils in points and rebounds, racking up 21 and 7, respectively, to go along with 7 assists. She was also perfect from beyond the arc and blocked two shots. Lesher put up a double-double with 12 points and a game-high 10 rebounds.

After last week’s action, Dickinson holds a record of 13-9 overall and 9-7 in the Centennial Conference. They are on the road against Johns Hopkins on Wednesday and against Franklin & Marshall on Saturday hoping to keep their playoff hopes alive.
