Men’s Laccrosse Takes Suffers First Setback of Season in Overtime Thriller

The Dickinson men’s lacrosse team lost a heartbreaker in overtime at 11th-ranked Cabrini College on Saturday, losing on a last-second shot in overtime.

The Red Devils took an early lead as Chris Menard ’16, Tyler Llewellyn ’17, and Brodie Philips ’19 (assisted by Tucker Carney ’18) each scored a goal within the first three minutes of the game. Penalties on Dickinson in the following minutes resulted in 2 straight goals by the Cavaliers despite multiple saves by goaltender Nick Baxter ’16. Dylan Maher ’18, with an assist from Llewellyn, capped off first quarter scoring with under a minute left.

Menard scored for the second time about 1:30 into the second, with an assist from Rob Kendall ’16, giving Dickinson a 5-2 lead. Cabrini stormed back, scoring 4 goals of their own in the span of 5 minutes, taking a 6-5 lead midway through the quarter. John Lockwood ’19 tied the game back up with 7:13 left before the Cavaliers scored 2 more goals to take the 8-6 lead. Maher scored his second goal of the contest for the Red Devils to cut the deficit to one before Cabrini answered with 2 seconds left to take the 9-7 lead into the half.

Scoring slowed down in the next quarter as each team only scored once in the third, with Menard putting it in the net for Dickinson, bringing the score to 10-8 going into the final 15 minutes of regulation.

Goals by Maher and Menard tied the game up with just over 10 minutes to play. Cabrini scored to take the edge with 9:23 left but Menard brought the score even again with his 5th goal of the game with just 7:59 to play. Each team came close to scoring but neither could regain the lead before regulation ended.

Both teams managed to get shots on goal throughout overtime but neither was successful until the Cavaliers managed to fire one into the net with 1 second remaining for their second straight overtime win.

This is Dickinson’s first loss on the year, putting their record at 3-1 so far. The Red Devils have put forward a very balanced attack thus far, as eight different players have tallied over five points through four games. Senior Chris Menard leads that pack with 13 goals and four assists in the early going. Sophomore Dylan Maher looks like a breakout candidate in his second season with 12 points and 11 goals so far.

They return home this Saturday to face Widener University at Biddle Field at 1 p.m.
