Women’s Lacrosse Opens Season in Style with a Biddle Blowout of Mount Union

The Dickinson Women’s Lacrosse team opened their season on a powerful note with a 13-8 home victory over the University of Mount Union. With the win Dickinson goes to 1-0 on the season, looking to extend their winning streak as they take action again on Wednesday, Mar. 9 at Biddle Field vs York College at 6 p.m.

The Red Devils scored first, and maintained their lead from the second half on. Based on their dominant level of play in the opener, it looks like 2016 is going to be a good season for Red Devil Women’s Lacrosse.

Dickinson got their name on the board after just 1:35, with Anne Dunster ’19 capitalizing on a feed from Megan McCulloh ’18. Shortly after, Talene Bush ’17 added to the total with a free position shot to take a 2-0 Red Devil Lead.

After a goal from the visitors cut the lead to one, Caroline Clancy ’16 and Jen Morrissey ’16 combined for another goal, but the visiting Raiders managed to pull even with 12:10 left in the half after back to back tallies, tying the game at three.

Alison Carey ’17 took control of the game for a stretch before the half. She scored an unassisted goal to break the tie before dishing out an assist to Katie Iverson ’16 to reclaim a two goal advantage.

After another goal from the pesky visitors, Morrissey found Maddie Siebold ’17 in front of net for the goal just before half. The Raiders would sneak in one more goal to keep the Red Devil lead to one at 6-5 at the break.

Just like she did in the first half, Dunster scored quickly out of the break for the home team. Mount Union  proved resilient, answering with consecutive goals to tie the game for a final time at 7 with over 25 minutes to play.

The Red Devils took over the game, outscoring Mount Union 6-1 in the remaining time. Dunster scored twice in just over two minutes for her third and fourth goals of the contest.  Morrissey, Clancy, Mara Cassidy ’16, and Sophie Waine ’17 each scored goals of their own in the remaining time to notch a dominant first home victory for the Red Devils.

On the defensive side, Tara Cuddihy ’17 made 14 saves and caused three turnovers in net. Moira Mahoney ’16  caused five turnovers on the contest while securing six ground balls and four draw controls. Mahoney’s defensive efforts were recognized earlier this week when she was named the Centennial Conference Women’s Lacrosse Defensive Player of the Week. On their successful season opener, Mahoney said, “Our first game was amazing. Of course we were nervous, but once we started playing as one unit we had an incredible game. It was definitely a good start to my last season.” If Mahoney can continue to anchor a defense in front of net that preforms like they did this past week, their could be success on the Red Devil horizon.

Following this strong effort, the Red Devils will once again play host at Biddle Field on Wednesday, this time to visiting #8 ranked York College.
