Men’s Lacrosse Score Big in Non-Conference Matchups

The Dickinson men’s lacrosse team had a convincing win against Widener 16-6 before splitting a pair of games against ranked opponents in the Green Turtle Classic at Stevenson University.  The Red Devils improved to 5-2 and are ranked #17 in the country as they begin Centennial Conference play this week.

Tyler Llewellyn ’17 scored the first of his three goals just 30 seconds into the game and the Red Devils didn’t look back as they cruised to a lopsided victory over Widener.  Dickinson rattled off four straight goals resulting in a 5-2 lead after the first quarter. They carried a 8-2 lead into the half. After the break Llewellyn scored again early, just 18 seconds into the half, as Dickinson added five more to take a 13-2 lead.  Rob Kendall ’16 and Chase Phillips ’17 each got onto the scoreboard before Tyler Strods added his second goal.  Widener added a few more before the horned sounded with Dickinson on top 16-6.  Nick Baxter led the Red Devils with six saves in net.

During Spring Break, the Red Devils took part in the Green Turtle Classic at Stevenson University.  The Red Devils dropped the first game as #6 Denison pulled out a 9-7 victory. Denison jumped out to an early 3-0.  However a goal by Dylan Maher ’18 sparked Dickinson to come back in the second quarter to take a 4-3 lead.  Denison added a late goal to even the score 4-4 at the half.  Coming out of the gate, it was Dickinson who would start fast as Chris Menard ’16 scored just one minute into the third.  John Lockwood ’19 added another and the Red Devils led by two.  However, Denison would score three unanswered goals in the waning minutes of the third to enter the final quarter up 7-6.  Lockwood scored his third goal to tie it at 7 all, but Denison would add the last two to win 9-7. Long poles Graham Parsons and Zach Blumenstein each recorded four ground balls for the Red Devils.

In the last match of the tournament, Dickinson looked to rebound against #15  Stevenson.  Despite early pressure from the Red Devils, Stevenson scored first at the nine minute mark.  Kendall tied the game with a long strike and Llewellyn netted an assist from Dane Huber ’18 to give Dickinson a 2-1 advantage.  The Mustangs evened the game at 2 by scoring on a man-up opportunity.  First-year Alex Hosker gave Dickinson the advantage again scoring his first ever collegiate goal.  After the Mustangs tied it again, Kendall added his second goal and the Red Devils took a 4-3 lead into the locker room.  First-year Brodie Phillips scored the first goal of the second half and Carney finished off a feed from Menard extending the lead to 6-3.  The teams battled to a 7-7 tie after three quarters.  Stevenson scored first in the fourth but Kendall and Carney would each complete the hat-trick, and with Menard adding one more the Red Devils held an 11-8 lead.  Hosker and Carney each added another to end the game as Dickinson picked up the huge 13-10 victory.  Carney and Kendall each added four goals.  Menard grabbed seven ground balls while scoring two assists.   Baxter finished with eight key saves.

The Red Devils continue conference play when they head back on the road to face off against Ursinus this Saturday.
