NCAA Tournament: March Madness Recap

No. 10 Syracuse is surprising everyone this year, but No. 1 UNC still looks to the be clear favorite.

The round of 64 provided its usual bracket-busting upsets in the form of wins by Yale, Stephen F. Austin, and Gonzaga over their heavily favored opponents. Perhaps the most surprising loss was that of No. 2 Michigan State to No. 15 Middle Tennessee State University. Unsurprisingly, nearly every bracket was busted after the first round. More surprises came when No. 7 Wisconsin took down No. 2 Xavier and Gonzaga continued its run by beating No. 3 Utah 82-59.

The Sweet Sixteen proved less dramatic that the previous two rounds and no upsets occurred as PAC-12 champions Oregon took down perennial contender Duke and UNC took care of business against Big 10 champion Indiana. The Orange ended Gonzaga’s improbable run at the title with a 63-60 victory.

The Elite 8 wasn’t short on drama, however, as No. 2 Villanova came out on top against Kansas to earn their first trip to the Final Four since 2009. They will have to bring both their best offense and best defense going to the next round if they want to have any chance of stopping the scoring machine that is Buddy Heild and the rest of Oklahoma’s squad, who easily handled Oregon to move on, 80-68.

Syracuse managed one of the biggest upsets of the tournament against Virginia, outscoring the Cavaliers 47-27 in the second half, culminating in a 29-8 run to overcome a 16-point disadvantage. They are the only No. 10 seed to ever reach the second-to-last round and head to their sixth Final Four, and first since 2013, to face the Tar Heels. Roy William’s team easily got past Notre Dame to clinch their 19th Final Four Appearance, the most all-time by any Division I program.

UNC remain the favorites to come out on top in the end with a 9/1 chance to win it all. The Wildcats square off against Oklahoma at 6:09pm on Saturday and the Tar Heels take on the Orange at 8:49.
