Baseball Splits with Shoremen

The Dickinson Red Devils baseball team finished out their season by splitting two series, one with Muhlenberg and another with Washington College.

The Red Devils fell behind early against the Mules in Allentown, trailing 3-1 after the first inning. After trailing 5-2 at the end of the seventh, Matt Primavera ’16 doubled to bring two runners home, narrowing the deficit, 5-4. Rick Hopkins ’17 and Brian McCloud ’16 both hit RBI doubles to close out the inning, giving Dickinson a 6-5 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth. Muhlenberg battled back and sealed the win with two-RBI singles in the bottom of the ninth, winning by a score of 7-6. Game two of the series ended up being a blowout as the Red Devils scored 2+ points in four separate innings including a 7-point eighth inning, beating the Mules 14-3.

Dickinson managed to strike first in game one against Washington as Austin Sumners ’18 got on base with a single and was brought home by a single from Steven Sakowicz ’19. The Shoremen managed to prevent any further scoring by Dickinson as they went on to score three unanswered runs of their own to take game one 3-1.

It was Washington striking first in game two, bringing home three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Luke Besse ’16 hit an RBI double to put the Red Devils on the board in the top of the second. Dickinson outscored the Shorement 4-1 through the rest of the game to take home a 5-4 victory in their last game of the season.

Despite missing the playoffs this year, the Red Devils have a much-improved record to be proud of, besting last year’s 14-21-1 tally with a 20-18 record this season. They also improved their team batting average from .275 last year to .295 this season. They’ll look to improve even more next season and to contend for a Centennial Conference Championship as well.

The Red Devils will lose some firepower at the plate for sure with this graduating class. Phil Werner ’16 had a team high 0.385 batting average for the season. The senior started every game this season for the Red Devils, notching 47 hits and 21 RBIs, while holding an impressive 20/12 walk to strikeout ratio. Additionally, Dickinson’s leading RBI man this year, Matt Primavera ’16, has played his last game as a Red Devil. Primavera finished the season with a team high 27 RBIs to go along with 40 hits and a team high 5 homers.

The two lowest ERA starters, Ben Woodard ’19 (1.53) and Cristian Acosta ’17 (2.70), will both be returning next year for Dickinson. If the Red Devils wish to improve their position in the Centennial Conference next season the rotation will need to be sharp to help the offense to compensate for the firepower moving out.
