Field Hockey Goes 1-1 in First Week of Play

The Dickinson field hockey team had a tough start in its season opener, falling at the #12-ranked University of Mary Washington, 3-0, last Friday but battled back to secure their first win of the season against St. Mary’s College on Saturday, September 3.

The Red Devils played a strong first half against the Eagles, with momentum shifting back and forth while both defenses held tough. The contest remained scoreless until the Eagles finally took advantage of a penalty shot with 4:28 remaining in the half.

Mary Washington kept the pressure on, getting multiple shots off to start the second period. Goaltender Freddie Bancroft ‘18 came up big, turning away two shots with a pair of outstanding saves.

The Eagles would go on to score twice in the second half, first at the 16:32 mark and later with just over eight minutes remaining in regulation.

Mary Washington outshot the Red Devils 16-5 and finished with a 9-5 edge in corners. The Red Devils only allowed 2 goals in the second half, but still fell to the Eagles by a score of 3-0.

Against Mary Washington, Chelsea Kramer ’19 scored twice in the first half to put the Red Devils up 2-0 at halftime. She struck first blood only 11 minutes in, finding the net  off of an assist from Kim Monteferante ’18.

Kramer’s second goal of the contest came off of a Taylor Bednar ’19 interception with just over 30 minutes remaining in the half.

Dickinson outshot the Seahawks 14-4 in the first period and held a 12-5 advantage in penalty corners at the break.

Catherine Perlmutter ’17 gave the Red Devils a 3-0 lead just over three minutes into the second half, and Amber Dey ’18 made the score 4-0 with just under 4 minutes left in regulation. St. Mary’s continued to fight and tried to battle back, scoring 2 goals in the final minutes to bring the final to 4-2.

The Red Devils finished the game with a 21-9 advantage in shots and held a 16-6 overall edge in penalty corners. Bancroft made three saves in the cage for the Red Devils.

The Red Devils’ record stands at 1-1 as they return home to face York College on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 7 at 4:00 p.m.
