Field Hockey Comes Up Short in Overtime Thriller

The Dickinson field hockey team came up just short in a hard-fought overtime thriller in its home opener on Wednesday, falling to York College, 5-4 as the Spartans scored the game-winning goal just 1:05 into overtime.

The Red Devils got off on the right foot, taking a 2-0 lead early in the first half. Taylor Bednar ’19 scored Dickinson’s first goal, thanks, in part, to an assist from Julia Murphy’19 just 3:42 into the game. The Red Devils went up 2-0 10 minutes later, making the most of a penalty corner as Chelsea Kramer ’19 found the net as Amber Dey ’18 assisted. It was her third goal of the season.

The Spartans got on the board in the 26th minute, cutting the deficit to 2-1 before scoring the tying goal with just 3 minutes to play in the half.

Dickinson regained the advantage to start the second half as Danielle Schwab ’18 found the back of the cage unassisted to give the Devils a 3-2 lead. York countered with back-to-back goals to take its first lead of the game with 15 minutes left to play in regulation. The Red Devils fought back, pulling even with just under 5 minutes to play as Kramer redirected another shot by Dey, earning their second goal and second assist of the day, respectively, and forcing the game into overtime.

York gained possession early in overtime and put a shot on goal that saved by goaltender Freddie Bancroft ’18, but the Spartans managed to get the rebound into the back of the cage to take the contest, 5-4.

Bancroft put up an excellent performance, finishing with 14 saves on the day. Kramer scored two goals and dished out an assist while Dey handed out two assists of her own. Both Schwab and Kim Monteferante ’18 were solid on defense as well.

With this loss, the Red Devils fall to 1-2 overall as they return to action next Tuesday, September 13, hosting Shenandoah University at 4:00 p.m.
