A.L. East Playoff Race Analysis: Part 2

A.L. East teams are notorious for their incredible offense prowess. This seems to make up for their relative lackluster defense and pitching. Red Sox’s offense tops the chart with a huge array of elite hitters: 7/9 hitters on starting roster have boasted 10+ hours while 2 of them (veteran David Ortiz and ace Mookie Betts) have already reached 3 digits in RBIs! Offense is the best defense, and Red Sox is proving that statement right. Blue Jays’ offense is equally scary, with last year’s MVP Josh Donaldson consistently showing his worth, league leader in RBIs Edwin Encarnacion continue to drive in runs. Did I forget to mention Jose “bat flip” Bautista? However, certain hitters (Justin Smoak and Josh Thole in particular) have been disappointing and tend to break the team’s offensive flow. Orioles, though, is all about hitting the ball out of the ball park (currently the top HR hitting team in the League by a mile). With power hitters in HR leader Mark Trumbo, Chris “Crush” Davis, and AL East MVP contender Manny Machado, Orioles can certainly rip teams apart on their days. On their off-days though, the team’s offense as a whole is extremely frustrating to watch when they all tend to swing wildly at pitches (they do have Chris Davis who leads the league in strike outs). The Yankees’ offense is certainly much less impressive, especially when team HR leader Carlos Beltran was traded to the Rangers. They do have a rising star in catcher Gary Sanchez, who has won Rookie of the Month and A.L. Player of the Month in August with his impressive displays on the plate. The team as a whole is improving offensively though, so it would be interesting to see how they do in the last stretch of the season. Red Sox certainly edges in terms of offense, but by very close margins.

Overall, we can all agree that this has been an amazing season in A.L. East division. But play-off spots are limited, so I (despite being an Orioles fan) have to give them to the Red Sox for division title and the Blue Jays for wildcard spot as they have shown more consistency throughout the course of the season. Sports are unpredictable though, so we will all see, come October 2nd.
