Volleyball Falls to York and Swarthmore

The Dickinson volleyball team gave the York College Spartans a run for their money on Wednesday night, but were defeated in three sets and were shutout on Saturday by Swarthmore despite some stellar plays.

The Red Devils only dropped the first set by two points, ending up with a score of 25-23. The visitors soon found their rhythm, though, posting scores of 25-14 and 25-16 to take the match.

Erin Bongo ’18 totaled three aces on the night to go along with seven kills. Lauren Ahern ’17 added five kills while Norma Jean Park ’18 and Lauren Beecher ’18 each had four on the night. Arielle Misrok ’17 recorded 13 digs and Alex Berezan ’20 dished out 10 assists to go with 11 digs and three aces.

The Red Devils gave the Garnet a hard time as well, as Dickinson overcame a 12-9 deficit and took a 17-13 lead late in the match. Swarthmore was able to rally, however, and managed to take the first set by a score of 25-21.

The Red Devils started the second set in similar fashion, playing the Garnet to a 6-6 tie, but Swarthmore was able to gain momentum and go on a long run, taking the second set by 10 points, 25-15, and never looked back as they sealed the match with a 25-16 in set three.

Bongo led Dickinson’s effort with 10 kills and seven digs. Park and Ahern combined for seven kills while Berezan racked up 17 assists. Misrok added 16 digs and first-year Jacqueline Banker ’20 recorded six.

With these losses, the Red Devils slip to 7-7 overall and 1-1 in the Centennial Conference. They traveled to Muhlenberg College on Wednesday night, Sept. 28 to take on the Mules at 7:00 p.m.
