Squash Falls at Naval Academy

The Red Devils put up a good fight, but were not able to overcome Navy and Virginia.

The Dickinson men’s squash team traveled to the U.S. Naval Academy for a pair of matches against the host’s Midshipmen and the University of Virginia at the Navy Round Robin.

The Red Devils opened the day with a tough match against U.S. Naval, falling 9-0. Abdelrahman Elsergany ’19 suffered a 3-0 loss in the top flight, but had three strong sets (15-13, 11-8, 11-6).

Cory Litman ’19 claimed the first set in the sixth flight before dropping the final three to take a loss for the flight (8-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6). Vincent Warzecha ’19 had a great performance in the eighth flight but could not pull off a win, falling in a five-set marathon (11-13, 12-10, 11-1, 12-14, 11-7). Hal Holappa ’19 and Alex Wattles ’20 had solid performances in the second and third flights, respectively.

Elsergany traded games in a tough 3-2 loss to Virginia, (11-8, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11, 11-9).

Haloppa won a hard fought third, 13-11 before falling in four sets in the second flight (11-5, 11-9, 11-13, 11-8).

Andrew Strudwick ’19 put up a strong challenge in the fourth flight, but fell 3-2. Litman turned in another solid performance (11-13, 12-10, 11-6, 11-9) and Zachary Najera ’20 claimed a set in the seventh flight.

The women’s team opened their season with a 9-0 loss to Virginia.

Domenica Romo ’19 played a strong match in the second flight, falling in 3 sets (15-13, 13-11, 11-5). Alanis Perez ’19 took a set in the sixth flight and Hedvika Suchankova ’19 played well in the top flight (11-8, 11-9, 11-6).

The Red Devils slipped 2-2 on the season and will travel to Cornell University to compete in the Cornell Round Robin this weekend.
