Squash Tops Denison and Haverford

The No. 21-ranked Dickinson men’s squash team and the No. 20-ranked women’s team each posted a pair of wins over opponents Denison University and Haverford College on Sunday, January 29 at the Kline Center.

For the men, Abdelrahman Elsergany 19 won the top flight against Denison, (11-6, 11-4, 12-10), as the Red Devils would go on to take eight straight-set wins in the match on their way to a 9-0 rout.

Hal Holappa ’19 took the second flight to five sets (6-11, 11-7, 7-11, 11-2, 11-4) before the Red Devils blanked Denison for the rest of the match, sweeping the next seven matches.

Against Haverford, the Red Devils captured seven straight-set wins. Elsergany and Holappa went 3-0 in the first and second set, respectively, while Strudwick allowed just nine points in his match (11-4, 11-2, 11-3).

Cory Litman 19 won the fifth set (11-3, 11-1, 11-7) while Harrison Mayo ’19 and Vincent Warzecha 19 captured the sixth and seventh, (11-4, 11-3, 11-7) and (11-4, 11-7, 11-3), respectively. Sam Portelance 18 followed up with a strong finish in the ninth (11-4, 7-11, 11-2, 11-3).

The women put on a clinic in the opener against Denison, Nicole DeLuca 19 moved into the second flight and allowed just seven points in a 3-0 set win, (11-1, 11-2, 11-4).

Alanis Perez ‘19 swept her set (11-5, 11-1, 11-1) while Abby Wingerd 19 and Merritt Davis 17 each allowed only five points in wins sixth and eighth sets, posting identical scores of (11-2, 11-1, 11-2). Meagan Dashcund 18 won the ninth set, (11-1, 11-2, 11-0).

The Red Devils put up another dominant performance against Haverford. Domenica Romo 19 stepped into the top flight and won in straight sets, (11-4, 11-7, 11-9).

DeLuca rallied from behind to win the second, erasing a 2-0 deficit in the process to take the set, (10-12, 6-11, 11-3, 11-3, 11-6). The Red Devils took straight-set wins in the next seven flights. Jaime Leigh Edghill ’20 won the third (11-3, 11-3, 11-1) while Dashcund added another decisive win (11-1, 11-1, 11-2).

Perez, Wingerd and Sarah Murphy ’19 all claimed victory in their respective matches while Patricia Francis-Hall 17 and Davis closed out the match, winning their respective sets (11-6, 11-1, 11-0) and (11-2, 11-5, 11-2), respectively.

The Red Devil men even their overall record to 9-9 while the women improve to 8-8 on the season. They are scheduled to host George Washington University on Saturday, February 11 at 3:00 p.m. for a Senior Day match up.
