Women’s Basketball Falls to the ‘Fords

The Dickinson women’s basketball team traveled to Haverford College on Saturday afternoon, January 28, for a Centennial Conference match up. The teams battled back-and-forth all afternoon with Haverford taking home the win in the end, 65-57.

The ‘Fords took a 5-0 lead early on but the Red Devils answered to keep pace. Haverford looked to pull ahead further on in the game but Hannah Heiring ’20 made a nice move to the basket and Emily Padalino ’20 knocked down a three-pointer to cut the deficit to one, leaving the score at 16-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Dickinson opened the second quarter with a 7-0 run, highlighted by a three-pointer from Padalino and back-to-back scores inside from Kassidy Lesher ’18 to take a 22-16 lead.

The teams traded three-pointers with Helen Roberts ’17 and Heiring each hitting one to give the Red Devils a 28-21 lead with just over four minutes left to play in the first half.

Mary Martin ’17 stretched the advantage to 30-21, but the ‘Fords countered with three straight scores to pull within three at halftime, 30-27.

The teams traded baskets to start the third quarter and Mackenzie Skerritt ’18 put Dickinson ahead by four with a three-pointer, 35-31.

Haverford eventually pulled back out in front, 36-35 before Martin and Roberts scored on back-to-back possessions to give the Red Devils a 39-38 lead with 3:01 remaining in the third quarter.

Haverford retook the lead with back-to-back field-goals before Lauren McBride ’20 made a three-pointer to tie the game at 42. The ‘Fords struck back with a three-pointer and a pair of free throws to take a five-point lead 47-42, heading into the final period of play.

The Red Devils made the most of their first possession in the fourth as Martin drove to the basket, making her shot and drawing a foul before completing the three-point play by sinking her free throw. McBride added a pair of free throws to tie the game once again, with 9:02 remaining.

McBride countered two scores from Haverford with a three-pointer from the wing and banked a short jumper to put Dickinson back up, 52-51. Accordig to Dickinson College Athletics: “The lead flipped-flopped as Berkel scored and McBride dished an assist to Lesher, who buried a jumper from the baseline.”

The ‘Fords countered with a triple to pull back in front, 56-54, with 5:19 left to play. Another pair of Haverford scores put the hosts out in front by seven. Martin converted a free throw but the ‘Fords struck again for a 63-55 lead with under two minutes remaining in the game. They added two free throws to make it a 10-point game with 39 seconds left to play and Padalino pulled down an offensive rebound and scored to close out the game for the final of 65-57.

Sierra Berkel led Haverford with a game-high 20 points as the ‘Fords improve to 14-5 overall and 11-3 in the Centennial Conference.

McBride led the Red Devils with 13 points including sinking 3 three-pointers. Martin reached double-figures in points, scoring 10 and corralling 5 rebounds.

Roberts scored 8 points and dished out a game-high 6 assists while Padalino tallied 8 points. Skerritt finished with 7 points and Lesher controlled 10 rebounds to go with 6 points on the afternoon.

After this loss, the Red Devils fall to 12-7 overall and 9-5 in the conference. They have since returned home to face Centennial Conference rivals McDaniel College on Wednesday night, February 1 with tip-off scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
