College Football Returns

Week one of college football was filled with all kinds of exciting football.

College football’s 2017 opening weekend provided great action to start the season. Continuing the tradition of Power 5 teams beating up on smaller programs, Wisconsin, Washington, Penn State, Clemson, Stanford and Oklahoma all posted blowout wins. Perennially, preseason-ranked USC had trouble dealing with Western Michigan, which could signal a lackluster performance when conference play starts.

No. 11 Michigan pulled out a win over No. 17 Florida after their offense had trouble finding a rhythm, giving up two pick-sixes on consecutive drives, which ended up being the Gators’ only touchdowns of the game. No. 1 Alabama rebounded from its title-game loss to Clemson with a convincing 24-7 win over No. 3 Florida State.

It’s hard to believe there is legitimate discussion about which Texas college football team had the worst season-opener in a weekend where one of them lost to an FCS team. The Longhorns of the University of Texas proved undeserving of their No. 25 ranking in the AP Coaches’ Poll, falling to a Maryland team that went 6-7 in 2016, finishing near the bottom of the Big 10 East. Then again, the Longhorns are no stranger to upset losses, as they suffered an embarrassing loss to Kansas last year, ending up one of only two teams that lost to the Jayhawks last year. Baylor lost to the Flames of Liberty University, a team in a lower tier of Division I football, and Texas A&M blew a 34-point lead to UCLA to lose 45-44 to complete the Texas.Week two is sure to bring more excitement, as Texas’ premier teams rebound before conference play begins.
