The Dickinson men’s soccer team made it into the NCAA National Tournament but lost to Emory in the first round.

The Dickinson men’s soccer team’s success in the Centennial Conference tournament earned them a trip to the NCAA Division III Men’s Soccer Championship, but they couldn’t make it past the first round, falling to Emory University, 3-1, at Lynchburg College on Saturday, November 11.

The Red Devils were in hole early on, as the Eagles scored three unanswered goals in the first half, two of them coming in the span of five minutes. Jason McCartney scored Emory’s first and third goals, the first being assisted by Aiden Datene, while Christian Meyer scored unassisted for the Eagle’s second goal.

Dickinson was unable to get much offense going in the first half but showed some signs of life after halftime. Brendan McGovern ’20 put the Red Devils’ only goal of the game on the board with just under 23 minutes left in regulation. Dickinson looked to score again to close the deficit, as Will Bracken ’18 and Colin Fagan ’21 got close to the net, but the Eagles’ defense was able to hold them scoreless for the remainder of the match and come away with a 3-1 win and a ticket to the next round of the tournament.

Emory ended the match with a 19-14 overall advantage in shots while Dickinson led 4-2 in corner kicks. Cole Gallagher had five saves for the Eagles while Frederick Meagher ’20 made five for the Red Devils as they finish the season with an overall record of 11-7-3. Matt Edmonds ’18 was named College Sports Information Directors of America (Co-SIDA) Academic All-District Men’s Soccer Team after an outstanding senior season.
