Women’s Squash Sweeps Mt. Holyoke

 

The No. 17-ranked Dickinson women’s squash team travelled to Amherst College for the Pioneer Valley invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 19 and 20, dropping their match against the hosts, 9-0, on Friday afternoon, but rebounding for a 6-3 victory over No. 20 Wesleyan University on Friday and a decisive 9-0 win over Mt. Holyoke College on Saturday morning.

In the Red Devils’ match against Amherst, Hedvika Suchankova ’19 won the first set in the first flight by the narrow margin of 13-11, but Haley McAtee was able to close out the flight with three straight victories for a 3-1 win (11-9, 11-8, 11-2) for the home team.

Domenica Romo ’19 battled to though five sets in the third flight but lost, 3-2 (14-12, 8-11, 11-5, 12-10). Carley Barton ’21 lost in the seventh, but managed to hold on for five sets as well.

Aya Sobhy ’21 clinched the match for the Red Devils in the win over Wesleyan in the fourth flight, over coming an early deficit for a 3-2 win (5-11, 11-9, 11-5, 11-9).

Abbie Wingerd ’19 overcame an 0-2 start to win the ninth 3-2 (9-11, 9-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-5).

Romo and Barton posted impressive wins while Nicole DeLuca ’19 survived a five-set marathon in the fourth and Alanis Perez ’19 won in straight sets in the eighth flight.

The Red Devils won seven matches by 3-0 margins on their way to a blowout of Mt. Holyoke. Suchankova won the top flight 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-5). She was followed by Eloise Nimoityn ’21 and Romo who swept the second and third flights, respectively, 3-0, as Romo earned identical scores of (11-4, 11-4, 11-4).

The Red Devils improve their overall record to 4-8 on the season as they travel along with the men’s team to Haverford College on Friday, Feb. 2 to face the ‘Fords at 10:30 a.m.
