Baseball Beats Back the Bears in Double-header

The Dickinson baseball team swept the Bears of Ursinus College in their Centennial Conference opener on Saturday, March 31. The Red Devils won the first game in 10 innings, 11-9, and won game two 17-12 in a contest full of offensive production.

The Red Devils started off the first game with three runs in the first inning as Alex Jacobson ’19 hit a two-RBI single to lead the way.

Ursinus outdid the Red Devils by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to take the lead but Brian Reilly ’20 brought in Robbie Thompson ’18 and Max Brown ’19 on a two-RBI double in the second to put Dickinson back on top.

The Red Devils tacked on another run in the fourth as Brown doubled and came around to score off of a single from Thompson to extend the lead to 6-4 before the Bears tied things up in the bottom half of the inning with a two-run homer by Alex Mume.

Dickinson retook and extended their lead over the next four innings as Chris Delsandro ’21 reached home plate off a sacrifice fly by Thompson and Brendan Pell ’21 singled, stole second and scored on a wild pitch in the sixth before Reilly brought in Brown on a double in the eighth to bring the tally to 9-6.

Ursinus stormed back, putting up three runs in the bottom of the ninth to send game one into extra innings. Pell hit a single and came in to score along with Brown off of hits by Thompson and Jacobson in the 10th.

Jacobson had a 3-for-6 showing at the plate with three RBIs while Thompson racked up four RBIs and two scored runs to go along with a pair of hits. Brown went 2-for-4 with two walks and five runs scored.

Billy O’Neil ’18 and Tommy Koide ’20 earned a combined 10 strikeouts on the mound while Reid Collins ’18 came on to close out the game.

Dickinson quickly jumped in front in game two, leading 11-3 after three innings after scoring five in the second and six in the third.

The Bears battled back, putting up three runs in the fifth, two in the seventh and four in the eighth, but it wasn’t enough as the Red Devils’ bats stayed hot, allowing them to maintain the lead and eventually secure a 17-12 victory in the nightcap.

The Red Devils’ record stands at 5-11 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference.  Dickinson will travel to Muhlenberg College to face the Mules on Friday, April 6.
