Men’s Lacrosse Takes Down Swarthmore

 

The No. 10-ranked Dickinson men’s lacrosse team held a sizeable lead on No. 4 Gettysburg on Wednesday night, April 10, but lost in a heartbreaking fashion, 12-11. They followed up with a 15-6 win over Swarthmore on Saturday, April 14.

The Red Devils were up big early on, as they tallied four scores before the Bullets were able to answer. Each team would go on to score once more in the first, making the score 5-2 going into the second quarter.

Long pole midfielder Nate Usich ’19 struck first, Matt Donnelly ’21 tallied just after and assisted Tyler Strods ’18 on a goal, and Dylan Maher ’18 scored twice.

The Red Devils outpaced the Bullets in scoring in the second period as Maher netted two more goals and Tucker Carney ’18 and Donnelly each tacked on one to give Dickinson a 10-4 lead at the half.

Maher added to his goal total with another early in the third quarter to make the Red Devils’ lead 7.

The Bullets struck twice in the third for a 11-9 score going into the final period of regulation.

Gettysburg finished the game with eight unanswered goals, with six in the fourth quarter. McCormick tallied the contest’s final goal to put the Bullets up by one. Jack O’Connell ’19 put a good shot on goal in the final seconds but the ball ricocheted off the cross bar and Gettysburg snuck by with the win, 12-11.

Dickinson boasted some remarkable individual performances on the day, as Maher scored five goals and Donnelly scored twice and added an assist. Ryan Campbell ’18 won 15 face-offs out of 25. On the defensive side, Charlie DeMuth ’19 scooped up four GBs and forced two turnovers while goalkeeper Cole Pellicano ’20 tallied 15 saves in the net for the Red Devils.

Dickinson struck first against the Garnet as Maher put the Red Devils on the board. The hosts countered with a goal of their own before Nick Goles ’20 and Maher tacked on two more to give the Red Devils the lead after one, 3-1.

The second quarter saw loads of scoring, as Dickinson outscored Swarthmore 6-2. The Red Devils countered with a four-goal run as Maher, Strods, O’Connell and Joel Mayo ’19 each tallied a score. The hosts broke up the run with a goal before Sam Saleeby ’18 and Maher both tacked on a goal to bring the score to 9-3 at halftime.

Swarthmore opened the third quarter with a two-goal run but Dickinson struck back with six unanswered goals to across the final two periods to seal the game as Maher and Carney each scored and Brodie Philips ’19 and Mayo each tallied twice.

Maher again put up great numbers, scoring five goals with two assists. Philips and Mayo each scored twice and Carney scored a goal. Pellicano made seven saves in goal to earn the win.

The Red Devils advance their record to 10-3 overall and 4-1 in the Centennial Conference.
