Ice Cream

As a winter chill settles over campus, many students are noticing changes in the cold treats available in the cafeteria. The Office of Dining Services has reduced the variety of frozen yogurt flavors available in soft serve machines and has partnered with a new supplier for its hard ice cream products.

The once-larger variety of frozen yogurt flavors has been limited to vanilla and chocolate. Director of Dining Services Errol Huffman explained that the flavor additives were removed due to “inconsistency of availability and product.”

The machine only serves two flavors at one time. According to Huffman, there were concerns when one of the two most popular flavors, vanilla and chocolate, had to be left out in order to provide a more unusual flavor.

However, there may be a flavor expansion soon, as Dining Services is looking into other soft serve machines with more flavor options.

There has also been a change in the hard ice cream providers this semester, and Huffman said that this would improve students’ dining experience. The cafeteria stopped serving Jack and Jill’s and began serving Yuengling’s hand-dipped ice cream.

A Dickinson alumnus runs the new provider company, and Huffman said the choice seemed natural, as it “is a premium product compared to the mid-range product…. We also see a few more flavor profiles that we did not see with our former ice cream.”

One of these is chocolate chip mint, which will be introduced “soon,” Huffman said. The cafeteria is also offering seasonal flavors, the first being spiced pumpkin roll that was available in October. Peppermint candy will be rolled out in the winter.
