Get Your Greek On Greek Week

Greek Week raised much more money for Salvation Army than expected, and committee members hope to make it into an annual event that promotes Greek unity and fundraising.

Beginning with a “torch run” to all of the chapter houses on campus on Oct. 2, and ending with a “chariot race” around Morgan Field on Oct. 7, the events for the week were open to all fraternity and sorority members on campus. There was a $5 entrance fee for the week and an additional $15 for an optional t-shirt, as well as fundraising events.

Although the total amount of money has not been calculated yet, Hannah Trusty ’17, a member of the planning committee for the event, said that “we exceeded expectations with how much money was raised and we’re really excited to be able to donate so much to the local Salvation Army.”

“Everyone showed up and had a great time for a good cause and that was all that we were hoping for,” said Chris Pease ’17, another member of the planning committee.

Other events included basketball and volleyball tournaments, swimming relays and pool games, tug of war, obstacle courses, and much more throughout the course of the week. All of the events were scored accordingly. Phi Delta Theta won the Greek Week games overall, Delta Nu won first place for sororities, and Kappa Sigma won first place for fraternities.

“I think everyone really enjoyed themselves and the bonds between Greek organizations were definitely strengthened through some healthy competition,” said Trusty.

Although this was the first Greek Week games, the Greek organizations intend to continue this as an annual tradition. “I had so much fun and it’s a shame that this event started when I was a senior so I can only participate in one. I think it’s a great event and really helps create unity and a positive image of Greek life on campus,” said Aine Zaniewski ’17, president of Delta Nu.
