This winter break, Dickinson College will send 11 students, two student leaders and two administrators to Belize, a country in Central America. There, all members will volunteer with the local community through various service projects. The trip’s two main themes will be Cultural Understanding and Literacy, and Education.

While in Belize, Dickinson will partner with Peacework, a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable development through agriculture, business, education, engineering, health, public service and technology. Dickinson’s volunteers will also work alongside local community members in order to gain a better cultural appreciation and understanding of culture in Belize. The primary factors under consideration during the application process will be a passion for community service, an interest in cultural experience and becoming an engaged citizen, the expectation of academic and student conduct and a willingness to work as part of a diverse team.

In order to secure a spot on the trip, all prospective students will need to complete the application process by 4 p.m. on Friday, October 10. The application must be submitted to [email protected], or through the Landis House on campus. Group interviewing will also take place from Monday, October 13 to Wednesday, October 15. Final decisions will be announced the week after Fall Pause. Once accepted, there will be six mandatory team meetings on Sundays from 2 to 3:30 p.m.

The trip will tentatively begin on January 3, 2015, and end on January 16. The cost of the trip will be $850 per student; however, in order to offset costs, limited scholarships will be made available to those who qualify.
