Relay to Rally For Cancer and Cures

The annual Relay event brings together students, faculty and cancer survivors. This year’s event will start in the Kline Center on Friday, April 10 at 6 p.m.

This Friday evening, Dickinson will once again host Relay for Life inside the Kline Center on the indoor track. Students will be walking around the track in teams to help raise money for the American Cancer Society, which will help benefit cancer research and support for families and patients.

Caylin Brahaney ’15, the head of Relay, provided a description of the event, saying, “At Dickinson, the event is 12 hours long and there are many activities, performances and ceremonies throughout the night.” She continued, “The money that’s raised goes to cancer research and support for cancer patients and their families. For example, there are Hope Lodges across the country, where current patients and their caregivers can stay while they are going through treatment.”

There will be numerous events and ceremonies taking place during those 12 hours: “The major events throughout the night are the three ceremonies. The opening ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m., followed by the survivor ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Lastly, the Luminaria ceremony is at 9:00 p.m.”

This year, the survivor ceremony will be a speech and a show as Relay has “a motivational speaker/magician coming to tell his story and perform a show! He is going to be speaking around 7:30 p.m. and his show will follow around 8 p.m.,” Brahaney said.

Numerous other events will happen throughout the show: Life-Size Hungry Hungry Hippos, dance performances by Hypnotic and Synergy (9:30 p.m.), a dunk contest by the Basketball team (11:30 p.m.) and a mini a cappella concert (midnight).

Teams sign up for the event to help raise money. This year, “We have 43 teams signed up right now, which is our goal for the year. Hopefully, we will also have other teams sign up at the event,” Brahaney said.

The monetary goal is $58,000. They are close to reaching that goal. Brahaney said, “we have a little more than $53,000 and we are confident that we are going to reach our goal of $58,000.” She continued to say, “Our participant goal is 800, which is pretty standard for our event. We have 600 signed up right now!”

There are many opportunities for students to get involved with this event. For next year, “Students can help/get involved by joining the committee and helping plan the event,” Brahaney said. Otherwise, if one wishes to help this year, they, according to Brahaney, “can register for the event and try to fundraise as much as they can before Friday night. They can also sign up to help set-up for the event, starting at noon on Friday.”
