The economics club, which formed this year, recruited new members at the Activities Fair on Sep. 6.

The Economics Club is a newly founded student organization affiliated with Dickinson’s Economics Department. It intends to provide a platform for Dickinson students to learn about economics through a variety of activities, and to strengthen communication among students and faculty members within the Economics Department.

“Dickinsonians who are interested in economics will particularly find this place appealing,” explained by Artemis Yang’ 17, the founder and co-president of the Economics Club. “The original [impetus] for us to start this club was aimed to provide a stage for enthusiastic Dickinson students to share their thoughts [about] the economics world and to explore more opportunities outside their daily classroom; I believe now we are heading in the right direction.”

“We have recruited nearly 80 new students at the beginning of this semester and nearly half of them are active members,” said Co-President Jonathan Baughman ’17.  “We believe this number will continue to rise if more students get to know our club and get involved in our actives.”

The Economics club provides a wide variety of activities and opportunities to its members. “Economic Talk” is now the core program.

“We will hold [Economic Talks] several times every semester to discuss issues related to economics from various grounds, including finance, market, government, social justice; almost everything that covers current affairs,” said by Hung Bui ’18 the event coordinator for the club.

Duong Nguyen ’18 said that the Econ Talk “is a fantastic event for me to bring my preliminary idea to the practice of the real world. The talk is also a good means for use to learn from each other who are so passionate about economics and changing the world.”

Besides the Econ Talk, the Economics Club will also have fun economics movie nights in which the members will enjoy a film about economics together and have an informal discussion. The club will also cooperate with the Economics Department to bring alumni back for lectures and conversations.

This semester, Matt Davis ’06, who recently finished his PhD in Economics at American University, will visit the Economic Club to present his dissertation research on issues relating to bankruptcy. After the presentation, there will be a private talk with members in Economics Club where Davis will share his experiences as a professional economist.

“We are looking forward to see what is going to happen this year with all those great opportunities and events,” said Yang.

Vice President Joshua Wexler-Waite ’18 explained that the Economic Club’s plan for the future is “diversification.”

The Economics Club holds weekly meetings on Thursday night at 8:00 p.m. in Althouse room 110. For more information, contact the club at [email protected].
