Belles Lettres Hosts Open Mic

Students gathered in the attic of Whistlestop Bookshop on High St. to read their creative writing.

Belles Lettres Literary Society, the group that produces Dickinson’s yearly creative literary magazine The Dickinson Review, hosted an open mic night at Whistlestop Bookshop at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 to give Dickinson students the opportunity to showcase their works of poetry and fiction.

On the second floor of the store, approximately 15 Dickinson students of all years and from a wide range of academic disciplines gathered and shared their creative works. Members of the Exiled Poetry Society were also present.

Co-Editor of The Dickinson Review Anine Sus ’16 oversaw the event and provided the open mic attendees with information on The Dickinson Review. Fellow Co-Editor Alejandro Heredia ’16 was not present.

.  According to Sus, The Dickinson Review features “creative writing of any kind – poetry, fiction, nonfiction, prose, as well as visual art.”  Any student can submit up to five poems, five pieces of visual art and three prose pieces (max 12 pages each).

When asked how she felt the open mic event went, Sus said it was “nice to have people from different disciplines share their work in this great space.”

English major Stephanie Czmar ’19 said, “I thought it was a really safe place for people to come and share their work.”

The Dickinson Review is due to be released in April 2016 and has begun taking submissions starting this past week, on Nov. 8. The deadline to submit work to The Review is Jan. 29, 2016. Students can submit their work online at this link: https://dh.dickinson.edu/review/node/2.
