Echosmith rocks the stage in ATS to a thin but enthusiastic crowd.

On Saturday, April 23, the indie pop group Echosmith hit the stage in ATS for the annual Dickinson College spring concert. Indie rock bands Rebel Light, Chaos Chaos and the Mowgli’s opened for the headliner.

Dickinson College’s Multi-Organizational Board (MOB) organized the event, and they aimed to branch out from featuring the typical pop, electronic dance music and hip-hop style artists.  MOB and the students who attended have expressed their satisfaction with the event and the quality of the bands that performed.

According to Matt Wenz ’17, MOB Executive Chair, MOB is not “disclosing the ticket number” for the concert.

Aaron Ammerman, co-chair of the event, said, “You’ll never contract an artist that everyone likes. It’s not possible…[but] when I see a crowd of people smiling and dancing during the culmination of all of our planning and hard work, all the negatives disappear…The performers put a lot of energy into the show and interacted with the crowd a lot. From what I could see, the people that were there had a great time and that’s all that matters.”

MOB used the input from student surveys conducted since last summer leading up to the event to choose a headliner, stated Program Coordinator for Student Leadership and Campus Engagement Jessee Vasold in an email. Vasold says MOB “isn’t sure that they will utilize the survey again.”

“There were concerns from some MOBsters initially that Echosmith would not bring a big turnout but, in the end, it was decided that since we had done the survey, we needed to stick to it. We took the advice of students… and prioritized their input. In this way, our goal for the concert was certainly met,” says Vasold.

Ammerman explained that the group Galantis had originally been the top choice for the concert, but Galantis’s management “was very slow [and] unresponsive,” which caused MOB to move forward with booking Echosmith, the second most highly voted group in the student surveys.

While the turnout for the concert was fairly low, students noted that they still had a good time and that the crowd picked up as Echosmith’s performance drew closer. “The concert started off with only a few students, but it definitely grew in size and excitement as the night went on” says Ali Resnikoff ’18.

Baylie Rubin ’18, said “the Mowgli’s were awesome and had a great stage presence.”

“I hope that students who attended the concert just had a lot of fun,” concluded Vasold.  “It was a lively show with a wonderfully positive message.”
