Letter to the Editor: Dedicated to Coach Breaux

Do you know Coach Darwin Breaux? He leaves the head-coaching position of the Dickinson College football team with more than twice the number of wins of any coach in the College’s long and rich sports history, but that is not the reason you should know him. He is that physically fit, white-haired guy you have seen at the Kline Center, if not on Biddle Field.

Some of you know him as a dedicated teacher, some as a caring mentor, and some as a person who has been a “second” father in your life at the College and beyond. I know Coach Breaux as a respected colleague, an educator who cares deeply about our College and students, and a friend.

Coach Breaux became the head football coach the year after I arrived as an assistant faculty member, and in the 23 years that followed, we have worked together on numerous occasions with the same goal, to bring talented students to our campus that will enrich our institution.

We have shared the same common aspiration for those students, to provide a useful education and help them succeed at the highest level possible. Through the football program, Coach Breaux has brought hundreds of students to Dickinson College, and they have benefited greatly from his guidance, while contributing to the life of the College in meaningful ways.

So, you should know Coach Breaux as a fellow Dickinsonian who “gets it.” A devoted teacher who understands that Division III student athletes play for the love of their sport and come to Dickinson for an exceptional education. I want to thank Coach Breaux for getting it, and making Dickinson College a better place through his passion for football.

Respectfully submitted,

Prof, Mike Roberts
