Men’s, Women’s Squash Open Season With Mixed Weekend

The Men’s Squash team opened with a 2-0 start to the season on Saturday, Nov. 7 at the Navy Round Robin, taking down University of Richmond and Washington University in dominant fashion. The Red Devils were not so luck on Sunday, falling to the UVA and George Washington University in Charlottesville, VA.

First-Year Abdelrahman Elsergany ’19 battled in the top flight against both opponents on Saturday. In a match with the Spiders he surrendered a mere 6 points all match. He cruised 11-2, 11-6, 11-5 in his second match against Washington.

In their 9-0 demolition of Washington, the Red Devils only dropped a single game in all nine matches. Andrew Surdwick ’19 had surrendered a mere point in his entire match against Washington, controlling the contest from start to finish.

The Red Devils fell 8-1 against the Cavaliers and were swept by the Colonials 9-0. After the weekend’s action, Dickinson should be happy with their efforts as they went 2-2 against some tough competition to begin the season.

The women’s squash team also travelled to Annapolis and Charlottesville this past weekend to get their season underway. The Red Devils swept the Blue Jays of Johns Hopkins 10-0 in their only match on Saturday. In the top flight Hedvika Suchankova ’19 won comfortably, taking the match 3-0 while only surrendering seven points.

First-years were on display for both the men and women on Saturday, as Domenica Romo ’19 and Nicole Deluca ’19 captured the second and third flights en route to a 10-0 sweep of the Blue Jays.

The Red Devils came up short on Sunday, falling to the Cavaliers and Colonials in consecutive matches. In the third flight, Deluca went up 2-0 in a highly contested match before falling 3-2.  Sarah Murphy ’19 jumped out to an early lead in her match against George Washington, but fell 3-1.

The Red Devils fell 9-0 in both matches, but showed that they have young talent that can compete at a high level.
