This week’s community spotlight is focused on sophomore Cheyenne Moore ’18. Moore is heavily involved with a wide variety of activities and organizations on campus such as, The Alliance for Aquatic Resources Monitoring (ALLARM) where she resides as lab coordinator, First-Year Mentor, Eco-Rep for Wellness House, Yes Please! peer educator, and Eta Sigma Phi Secretary.

“Helping First-Years transition into college makes me feel like I’m making a difference. I had a hard time adjusting last year so it’s important to me that First-Years are adjusting well” said Moore. “My work with ALLARM is also really important to me as a biology major, Pennsylvania resident, and a proponent of citizen science and keeping our water clean. There are days where I test samples from my home county or places I have visited and it makes me feel good to know I’m helping groups in these areas keep their waterways safe.”

Moore stated that last year many first-years did not enjoy their first year interest group (FIG) experiences. She however she did, only because of her outstanding mentor. It is because of her mentor and Moore’s difficult time adjusting to college that she decided to become a mentor. As a sophomore myself I remember moving in like it was yesterday. I was extremely anxious throughout the move in process and having such caring and influential mentors to help you find your first niche at Dickinson truly is something so crucial for the first year experience.

“As a first year mentor I am a resource for my group of first years. I am here for them if they have any question or concerns about anything here on campus,” said Moore. “I also try to plan fun meetings with them, like s’mores and hiking and pumpkin carving. As a peer educator I help to facilitate extended orientation. This year’s theme is ‘Real Talk’ and it discusses healthy relationships.”

Moore explained that out of all her memories so far at Dickinson, her best memories have come from her experiences as a mentor. “I would have to say one of my best experiences at Dickinson was Pre-O with my FIG this year. I did not do Pre-O my first year here, but seeing how much fun my own group had and how much they bonded was wonderful. Also, seeing all the great things they are already doing on campus this year has made me realize how important it is to connect with the others in your class and incoming students in my case.”
