Dickinsonians are Falling for Fall

Visiting the farmers’ market, apple picking, sitting in the acclaimed Adirondack chairs scattered about campus doing homework, and attending sporting events are just a few examples of what Dickinson College students love to do in the fall.

As the leaves turn colors, the fresh air becomes crisper, and Barbour jackets and Ugg boots emerge as the preferred clothing style on campus, students are beginning to take advantage of the new season.

Taylor Scott ’19 said, “I love going to the farmers’ market on Wednesdays and making dinner with my friends with the local finds.” When asked about what types of dishes she normally prepares from the produce at the market, Scott said, “Usually we do garlic zucchini and broccoli with chicken and avocado… that’s probably our go-to.”

The farmer’s market is situated in downtown Carlisle and is open on Wednesdays from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. It’s located at the intersection of Hanover Street and High Street.

Killian Donahue ‘19 also loves getting fresh fruit in the fall but not from the market. When asked about what she enjoys the most about the fall, she replied, “It is perfect weather for apple picking and hiking.”

“In Carlisle, the hiking is great.” Donahue added. “There are a lot of trails to go on and places to go.”

Waggoner’s Gap Hawk Watch is a hiking trail about 15 minutes from campus. To get there from campus, you simply head north on North College Street towards West Louther Street, take a left on B Street, and continue onto PA-74 N/Waggoners Gap Road for 11.9 miles.

Lana Feteiha ‘19 said that doing homework outside, going on walks and, like Scott and Donahue, picking fresh foods are the best things to do in the fall here at Dickinson.

Feteiha said “My two favorite activities are walking around outside looking at the trees, going apple picking and eating apple cider doughnuts.”

Going on walks and eating fresh foods aren’t the only activities students at Dickinson love to do during the fall season.

Scott Elder ‘20, who plays on the Dickinson football team, said, “I love playing football… the weather is great, and it’s not too hot.” Elder also added, “[the weather] reminds me of playing in Mass, where it is usually not too hot.”

Football isn’t Elder’s only favorite activity. He added, “I also like going on runs. Running outside is beautiful with the color of the trees changing.” Lastly, he said that sitting outside is definitely a highlight and keeps him focused on his work because the weather is so nice.

Ryan Lucas ‘20 is a big advocate for fall activities. Lucas said, “My favorite things to do at Dickinson (in the fall) are attending sporting events, studying on Britton Plaza, and walking into downtown Carlisle.”

Even though students are enjoying the fall season, some students are not too thrilled about the weather.

Billy Burger ’19 said, “fall is one of my favorite seasons… this weather is definitely not fall-like.” Burger continued, “I play football here and it’s always around 70 degrees. It feels more like the end of pre-season not the end of October. Hopefully, in the next few weeks, it gets colder and feels more like fall.”

As the weather is getting cooler, slowly but surely, Dickinson students are starting to take advantage of fall activities that only happen once a year.
