Caf Review: General Tso’s Chicken

Caf Review: General Tso’s Chicken

Rarely would I ever compare cafeteria food to food from a restaurant, but the General Tso’s chicken from the KOVE is worthy of the comparison. General Tso’s chicken was rich in flavor. The chicken itself was tender but slightly crispy, giving it a great texture and the sauce was sweet with a hint of spice. The rice was perfectly steamed, making it appear fluffy. I expected the rice to be a bit crunchy, as is common in the Caf; however, the rice surprised me with its moistness and lack of crunch. The drizzling of sauce that covered the rice offered the perfect taste combination. The combination of rice, sauce and chicken in one bite gave me a slight euphoria which could not be replicated by anything else served in the Caf that night. The true surprise of the meal was the vegetables that happened to be included. The vegetables in General Tso’s chicken normally don’t offer much flavor-wise but these vegetables helped to enhance the meal. The vegetables were most likely steamed which was a wise choice by the chef. The vegetables gave a somewhat herbal flavor due to the sauce covering but they were nonetheless delectable. The vegetables, mainly a combination of carrots and soybeans, offered an earthier taste to the sweet and spicy dish. Overall, the dish was worthy of being found in a local Chinese restaurant. The surprising factor is that the dish was limited in the recipe due to food restrictions at the KOVE. If you ever have a hankering for Asian food that is restaurant quality, visit the KOVE for General Tso’s chicken, when available.
