Let’s Get Reel: Single Parents

I recently watched the pilot of a new show called Single Parents, which focuses on a group of parents that use one another to navigate the world of parenting without a significant other.

One of the protagonists of the show, Will Cooper (Taran Killam) has been single for about five years, after his wife left him and his daughter and has still not completely recovered from the loss. Will still seems to suffer from secondhand guilt after his wife left and attempts to ease that guilt by overindulging his daughter and focusing solely on parenting.

It isn’t until Will’s daughter, Sophie, starts at a new school that he meets a small group of single parents that help each other with babysitting, cooking and day-to-day activities. Having Taran Killam from Saturday Night Live also helps add a level of comedy to the show, although at times his character seems a bit overly dramatic. As a child of divorced parents, I can honestly say that while my parents went through their own strange “single parent” phases, this show definitely dramatizes the single parent stereotype.

For me, the theatrics really draws away from the show itself, which is based around friendship and support in a time of need.

I am not sure if I will continue to watch this show religiously, as the plot doesn’t seem to be particularly exciting, but it is a nice wholesome show that is good to watch during a stressful week at school.

Overall, I think that the characters are believable, but I feel as though it is a plot that works for a shot movie, not a long-lasting TV series.
