Kappa Kappa Gamma’s annual Philanthropy Lipsync event succeeded in raising money for their charity, Reading is Fundamental. More than fifteen different groups preformed at the event, including sports teams, to clubs, to sororities.

Reading is Fundamental promotes literacy and a passion for reading in all American children to help raise literacy rates across the nation. Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Philanthropy Chairman Faye Cerniglia ’22 organized this year’s event.

The event consists of these groups preforming a routine of song mash-up before an audience of peers and a panel of judges. The judges decided which teams placed in the top three for the event. In third place were the Class of 2023 baseball players. Kappa Alpha Theta placed second—beating their previous third place finish from years prior. Pi Beta Phi took home the first place award—beating their second place finish from last year.

Although Lipsync is a competition, many of the participants find that preparing and preforming for the event is a great bonding experience. Sarah Davis ’22, a member of Delta Nu, said she enjoyed her time performing in Lipsync. “For my pledge class, it was a good bonding experience,” Davis said, “it definitely got a lot of us out of our comfort zones by making a fool of ourselves onstage. It was definitely a highlight of my year so far.” Likewise, Lan Pham ’22 a member of Kappa Alpha Theta said she “would totally practice Lipsync all over again with [her sorority sisters,] it was a fun experience for those of us who [have] barely danced before.” Mia Kilkeary ’22 who was one of the choreographers of Pi Beta Phi’s winning routine said that “winning after everyone put so much time and effort into practicing felt extremely rewarding” and that “actually being up there and performing was very fun.”

The event raised roughly 3,800 dollars in donations. Cerniglia reflected on the event’s success. “[…] To be able to give back to an amazing organization like Reading is Fundamental is something I will always cherish,” she said.

Kappa Kappa Gamma hosted the Lipsync event in ATS on Thursday, Oct. 31 at 7 p.m.
