In the past few weeks since starting the semester, we have been getting back into the groove of campus life. Classes, friends and clubs have been starting up again, including The Dickinsonian.
Typically at the start of the semester, the best time for students to find a new club to join is the activities fair. However, this semester, due in part to little advertising from most clubs that the fair was actually happening, we had significantly less signups compared to the fall semester.
Despite these lack of signups at the activities fair, I have noticed an interesting trend in the past week before the production of this issue. Several students who have not previously been involved with the paper and did not sign up at the fair have shown interest in getting involved. I have been pleasantly surprised over the past few days with this little increase in interest for writers and photographers.
Some of what I have heard from these new perspective writers is that they did not know how easy it is to get involved with the paper. There is no application process or experience needed, and you can write about ideas we propose or any ideas you may have and want to suggest to us. All you need to do is come to our office during our writers meetings on Sundays at 5, and if you want to send in an opinion piece you can simply send it to our email.
We are also open to those who have interests outside of writing. Whether that be photography, social media, graphic design or business management, we are always happy to have new members involved.
This flexibility of what The Dickinsonian can offer has been a favorite element of the paper for me since joining—you can make it whatever you want to. Do you have a particular interest, like politics, and want to write about that? You can! Or maybe you want to make graphics to go along with articles? You can do that too!
I hope some of our frequent readers and wishful writers and non-writers can continue this great flow of new contributors we have been having, as well as the return of our great writers from last semester.
