Women’s Swim Third at Gettysburg

The Dickinson women’s swim team travelled to Messiah College for a meet with the Falcons on Tuesday Dec. 1 before travelling to the Gettysburg Invitational over the weekend. The Red Devils suffered a narrow defeat on Tuesday before swimming well and claiming third place over in Gettysburg.

On Tuesday, the Red Devils took the quick trip to Messiah College for a meet with neighbors Messiah College. Olivia Lyman ’19 was a star in the pool for the Red Devils on the night of the meet. The first-year swam to victories in the distance events, winning the 500 and 1000 free events, adding a gold in the 200 IM as well. Brenna Nimkoff ’18 finished just behind Lyman in both of the distance events for the silvers, as well as finishing fourth in the 200 free.

Katie Schmidt ’19 earned a pair of silvers on the day, taking second in the 200 medley relay and the 200 backstroke. Sammy Boswell ’19 anchored the same medley relay and placed second and third in the 50 and 100 free events, respectively. The Red Devils swam well all afternoon, but fell short in a 122-83 contest.

In the Gettysburg Invitational, the Red Devils narrowly held off Susquehanna to claim a spot on the podium, earning third place for the weekend. Schmidt had a slew of top-10s over the weekend, anchoring the fifth-place 800 free relay with taking fifth in the 100 backstroke as well. Additionally, the first-year contributed on the sixth place 400 medley relay team and swam to a sixth place finish in the 500 freestyle event.

Senior Red Devil Caitlin Klockner ’16 raced well in the free relay and the 400 medley relay, as well as claiming third in the 50 free sprint. Lyman had a trio of impressive performances in the morning session Saturday, highlighted by a victory in the 500 free race with a winning time of 5:10.12.

Nimkoff and Katie Nirenberg ‘16 also swam well in the 200 free for the Red Devils, finishing 10th and 11th respectively for the race. Amanda Custer ’19 and Sammy Holden ’18 both posted top-10s for the Red Devils in the 100 butterfly event. Custer also swam on the 200 free relay team and the 400 medley relay.

After competing well across two days, Dickinson claimed third place in the overall team competition. The host, Gettysburg, claimed the Invitational, with Mary Washington claiming the silver to round out the podium.

The men’s and women’s teams will travel together down to Ft. Lauderdale, Florida for the Bob Mowerson Invitational after the holidays. The Red Devils begin competition on January 7.
