Distance Runners Continue to Shine at Susquehanna

The distance groups of both the men’s and women’s teams turned in outstanding performances over the weekend just as they have done throughout the entire winter season.  Many runners including Mackenzie Shelgren ‘16, Abby Colby ‘16 and Sofia Canning ‘18 all had top 10 performances in the Centennial Conference in recent weeks.  The runners showed their talents at the Susquehanna Invitational while Shelgren, Colby, Canning and Adriana Frayne-Reixa ‘17 were asked to participate in the David Hemery Valentine’s Invitational at Boston University.

Junior Mason Hepner ‘17 earned the lone win for the men’s team at Susquehanna.  He finished first in the mile while Will Chandler ‘19 followed in the top 10.  The two then joined Eric Herrmann ‘19 and Miles Lindsey ‘18 in the 4×400 meter relay in which they placed seventh. The final highlight of the day for the Red Devils was a three, four, five finish in the 3000 meter. Senior Eli Howard ‘16 led the way, finishing just seconds before teammates Duncan Hopkins ‘19 and Alex Predhome ‘16.

On the women’s side,  Carly Pierson ‘16 had an outstanding performance as she finished first in the 3000 meter followed by first-year Lucile Ionescu ‘19 in eleventh.  Hannah Gore ‘18 finished thirteenth in the mile and Jamie George ‘17 placed ninth in the 800 meters.  However, the two ended up with a fourth-place finish as they joined Jackie Hochheiser ‘18 and Caitlin Farrell ‘18 in the 4×400 relay.

The women’s sprinters and leapers had a successful outing as well.  Hochheiser added another solid performance by finishing in eight in the 400meter.  Junior Aphnie Germain ‘18 came in fifth in the 200.  Amanda Jimcosky ‘18 took second in the high jump with a height of 1.58 meter while Imani Beard ‘18, who also won the bronze in the long jump, finished seventh with a height of 1.48 meters.

Both the men and women are back in action this coming Saturday as they travel back to Selinsgrove, PA to compete in the Susquehanna Open. The meet begins at 10 a.m. The Centennial Conference Winter Championships then occur the following weekend from Feb. 27-28.
