Women’s Lacrosse Wins Four of Five

The Dickinson women’s lacrosse team has been on a hot streak lately, winning four of their last five games since March 23.

The Red Devils held off Lebanon Valley College 9-7 on March 23 to tally their second win of the season. Sam Marmo ’19 scored first for Dickinson, netting an unassisted goal with 19:34 left in the first half. Jennifer Morrisey ’16 scored just over a minute later, tallying her 100th career point. The Dutchwomen scored two goals in response before Anne Dunster ’19 and Katie Barton ’18 both found the net. LVC countered with one more goal before halftime to bring the score to 4-2 at intermission.

Both teams traded scores for the remainder of the game with Dunster, Maddy Siebold ’17, Sophie Waine ’17, and Caroline Clancy ’16 putting up points to hold off a late surge from the Dutchwomen, and securing the hard fought win.

In their first Centennial Conference game of the season, the Red Devils came up with a dominating 17-2 win over Bryn Mawr. Marmo scored four goals and dished out two assists, Siebold and Waine each tallied two goals. A whole host of Red Devils also contributed with one goal apiece.

Dickinson dropped its next game to No. 2-ranked Middlebury College by a score of 12-7 despite strong performances from Marmo, Molli Haimerl ’17, Colleen Zulty ’16, Lucy Reider ’19, and Moira Mahoney ’16.

Middlebury entered the game #2 in the nation and it proved to be the biggest test of the young season for Coach Lowry’s team. The Panthers scored two early goals but the Red Devils showed their resiliency, only trailing 5-3 at the half.

Middlebury, demonstrating why they have received so much respect in the polls, opened the second half on a 4-0 run. Yet Dickinson did not back down and were within three goals with 6:58 left to play. Ultimately it proved to be too little, too late, but the 12-7 loss had many silver linings. Goalie Tara Cuddihy ’17 was the star of the game, recording 15 brilliant saves in net.

In their next game the Red Devils fought hard to edge No. 14-ranked Messiah College 13-11. Scoring went back and forth between the two squads before Messiah strung some goals together to go up 5-3. Morrisey and Dunster scored a goal to answer and bring Dickinson even before the Falcons managed to outscore Dickinson and take a 9-7 lead going into halftime. Siebold scored twice in the second half to help secure a 13-11 come from behind victory.

The Red Devils remain undefeated in conference play thanks to their 13-8 win over Ursinus last Saturday. The Bears took an early 2-0 lead but Siebold and Eleanor w ’19 both scored to tie the game with 18:39 to play in the first half before the two teams traded goals. Dickinson outscored Ursinus 9-4 in the second half as Caroline Clany finished the game with an outstanding six goal performance.

Dickinson sits at 5-3 overall and 2-0 in the Centennial Conference. They will look to stay undefeated in the Centennial as they travel to Haverford College on Saturday.
