Field Hockey Wins ‘Play for the Cure’ Game

The Dickinson field hockey team turned in a strong offensive performance, posting a 4-0 rout over visiting Shenandoah University on Tuesday afternoon, September 13, and following it up with a 2-1 victory over Haverford on Saturday, September 17, in the Play for the Cure Game, part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

The Red Devils got on the board first against Shenandoah, scoring just 12 minutes in when Chelsea Kramer ’19 dished out an assist to Catherine Perlmutter ’17 who was waiting to put a shot in the back of the cage.

Dickinson doubled their lead later on in the first half as Kramer’s second assist of the day found Taylor Bednar ’19, who scored with just over seven minutes remaining in the first half, for a 2-0 lead. The Red Devils dominated the first half, out shooting the Hornets 11-1 at the cage and 4-0 in corners.

Dickinson held on to their momentum through halftime and into the second half, scoring just 3:09 after intermission as Kramer redirected a shot from Amber Dey ’18 into the cage, giving the Red Devils a 3-0 advantage. Merritt Davis ’17 tallied Dickinson’s final goal of the day in the 44th minute on a penalty corner, with help from assists by Dey and Kim Monteferante ’18.

Dickinson out shot Shenandoah 14-5 on the day and out gained the Hornets on corners, 8-1. Heather Meeder ’20 earned the shutout in her first collegiate start in the cage.

The Red Devils drew first blood against Haverford as Bednar redirected a pass from Monteferante with just under 2 minutes remaining in the first half.

Dickinson didn’t let up in the second half as they stretched their lead to 2-0 as Kramer scored off an assist from Dey in the 41st minute. Haverford tried to make a comeback, scoring with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game, but Red Devils’ held fast and allowed the clock to wind down until regulation ended with the score favoring Dickinson, 2-1.

After coming up with just 2 shots in the first half, the ‘Fords finished evened things out with Dickinson the game, 11-11 while both teams each tallied 9 penalty corners on the day. Meeder, in her second collegiate start, made five saves to earn her second win in a row.

Following these 2 wins, Red Devils improve to 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the Centennial Conference.  They host the Gettysburg College Bullets on Wednesday, September 21 at 4 p.m.
