The Dickinson men’s soccer team has started the 2017 season 2-0, notching a 4-1 win over William Patterson University on Friday, September 1 and blew out Morrisville State (N.Y.), 8-2 on Saturday, September 2 in the second round of the Blue Jay/Red Devil Classic, hosted in conjunction with Elizabethtown College.

All of the scoring in Friday’s game came in the second half, as the Red Devil seniors broke the stalemate when Will Bracken ’18 finished an assist from classmate Ryan Brown ’18 just 2:28 after halftime.

Chris Pollock ’18 and Matt Edmonds ’18 ramped up Dickinson’s offense even further, with each dishing out assists within minutes of each other. Pollock set up Kevin Gilbert ’20 and Edmonds fed Mohammed Kane ’20 for a 3-0 advantage.

The Pioneers broke the shutout in the 77th minute with a corner kick as Ryan Bartel redirected the kick from Cameron Allen to make the score 3-1.

The Red Devils kept up the pressure on offence and sealed the game as Brendan McGovern ’20 collected a loose ball after back-to-back saves by the Pioneer goaltender and managed to score the game’s final goal with 11:42 remaining in the match.

William Patterson had opportunities throughout the game but Dickinson held strong in the defensive end. The Pioneers held a 13-10 advantage in shots and had a 5-4 edge in corners on the night.

Goaltender Frederick Meagher ’20 finished with five saves while Morris came away with three.

Dickinson started off much faster-paced against Morrisville as Edmonds fed a great pass into the middle before Gilbert let the ball through to a cutting McGovern, who in turn put the ball into the back of the net, just 12 minutes in.

Gilbert found Edmonds for a score in the 24th minute before McGovern collected a rebound and tallied his second goal of the game for a 3-0 advantage with 17:10 left in the half.

Kane stretched the margin to 4-0 with an assist from Ian Logan ’21 with just under 13 remaining in the first half. The Mustangs capitalized on a corner kick to make the score 4-1 at the break.

Colin Fagan ’21 went on a tear, finding the net twice in a span of just 1:28 to open the second half. Ward Van de Water ’19 assisted on the first while Edmonds and Logan pitched in on the second.

Morrisville managed to put another goal on the board before the Red Devils tacked on two more goals in the final 13 minutes as Max Matsumoto ’21 tallied his first collegiate goal before Logan tallied the match’s final score to bring the final to 8-2.

Cody Welkey recorded seven saves for Morrisville as they fall to 0-2 on the season. Meagher tallied one save while Maxwell Barrett ’20 stopped both shots he faced in the final 28 minutes of the match.

The Red Devils improve to 2-0 so far in the season. They are home again this weekend, hosting Lycoming College at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, September 9 and facing Gordon College on Sunday, September 10 with both matches set to start at 12:00 p.m.
